HEAVY 8.6 Gram (0.30 Ounce) Whopping Almost 1/3 Ounce. Vintage SIGNED Ostby & Barton 1940's 10k Solid Yellow Gold ring is set with a STUNNING LARGE 16x12mm. BLUE FIRE with FLASHES of ORANGE & GOLDEN FIRE. Black opal is the most rare and valuable of all opal. The fire in this opal changes depending on the viewing angle. As with all opals it is brightest in sunlight or full spectrum lighting. This is a triplet opal where the brightest genuine & natural solid opal is mounted on backing of onyx and then covered with a protective clear natural quartz crystal cap. We took quite a few photos of this stunning opal under different lighting conditions to give an idea of the abundance and brightness of the fire and where it occurs. The waves and swirls on the opal in the photos are not blemishes but shadows and reflections as the polished surface is difficult to photograph. This Opal is a Rectangular Cabochon Cut. Cabochon refers to a gemstone that has been shaped and highly polished instead of being faceted. This opal is in PERFECT PRISTINE CONDITION free of any cracks, scratches, or chips. We sell quite a few Ostby & Barton rings and most have an "OB" hallmark or an "OB" with a maltese cross. We discovered that the "OSBEE" hallmark is a rarely seen later period Ostby & Barton hallmark. We found this label on the bottom of an Ostby & Barton store counter display.
(See photo #11) The label says "OS BEE Quality Rings Since 1879 Ostby & Barton Providence RI" We matched this hallmark to a 1940's catalog to date the period. The interior of the ring is also fully hallmarked with the maker's mark of "OsBee" which is the hallmark for Ostby & Barton an extremely collectible and sought after vintage brand. Ostby & Barton, Providence R. The business was established in 1879 by Englehart C.Ostby perished in the Titanic disaster while his daughter Helen made it to a lifeboat and survived. The company went on to become one of the most famous jewelry companies in the world. Ostby & Barton Jewelry is now an extremely collectible and highly sought after vintage brand. The dark areas on the gold in the photos are not blemishes but shadows and reflections due to the difficulty in photographing the highly polished gold. The darker oil slick look in the side details is the natural patina of the ring that only comes with age.
If you would like us to polish the ring further to remove this patina just let us know, it is no problem at all.
